On Islamorada Key, part of the Upper Florida Keys, you’ll find Amara Cay Resort, another stop on my Keys trip this past summer. This resort has undergone a $10 million renovation a few years back and has 110 well-appointed guest rooms and suites.
The suites are massive, modern, and sleek, with all the best amenities, including fine French bathroom toiletries.
The lobby, with its reclaimed wood tables, sculptures, and swinging chairs, reflects the Keys’ relaxed atmosphere and luxurious style.
There is a lot to do and see on Islamorada Key. If you like fishing, I suggest grabbing some supplies from Total Fishing Tackle, as this is the sport-fishing capital of the Keys. You can also snorkel on the reef or go wreck diving.
After your excursion, visit the Florida Keys Brewing Co. where they infuse their brews with local flavours such as key lime, citrus, and local honey,
Amenities include the on-site full-service watersports facility. Go on a snorkelling excursion or kayaking, or hop on a wave runner or paddleboard. A free shuttle brings guests to sister resorts with wade-in beaches a few minutes away.
If this feels a little too hectic, you can relax with a good book in one of the hammocks strung between palm trees on the beach, which was right up my alley.
Chill out at Reelburger’s Tiki Bar, open for lunch and dinner and serving American fare and tropical cocktails, including wine and beer. Fresh fish tacos, grilled jumbo shrimp, and Key lime pie are among the menu highlights.
So if you’re looking for laid-back elegance and a carefree atmosphere Amara Cay should fit the bill; winner of the 2015 Sandi Design Award for Design Excellence Hospitality.
